We are a home-based supplier of amateur television components and customized name badges and luggage tags. Born out of a deep love for all things ham radio and amateur television, Harlan Technologies was established in 1993 by Eugene “Gene” Harlan, WB9MMM. Since Gene never discovered a gadget he didn’t like, the founding of Name Tags By Gene quickly followed. Crafting name and luggage tags was a wonderful outlet for Gene’s creative energy. Both Harlan Technologies and Name Tags By Gene was run by Gene, an electrical engineer, and his wife Shari, N9SH, until the time of Gene’s death in November 2008 from ALS. Since then, the companies have been run by their son Shawn, KA9BXA, and his wife Sara. We run the companies as a true family business, often “employing” our three school-aged children in age-appropriate activities in our shipping and “complaints” departments.
During the last eleven months of his life, Gene worked tirelessly with us to provide a smooth transition of ownership to ensure that Harlan Technologies and Name Tags By Gene would continue to provide high quality products and five-star customer service – something Gene prided himself on. You may recognize Harlan Technologies and Name Tags By Gene from some trade shows and hamfests across the nation where Gene took them on the road prior to his illness. While our healthcare professions (Shawn is a Certified Nursing Assistant and Sara is a Registered Nurse) do not currently allow us to travel with the businesses, we are still here continuing Gene’s legacy.
